Dignity and Safety at Home: The Power of Accessible Bathroom Design
Aging in place allows older adults to remain in their homes over time, promoting independence, fostering familiarity and reducing nursing home admissions. The National Institutes of Health report that “if environmental demands exceed functional capacity, environmental pressure increases, leading to a decline in quality of life.” Home modifications are key in enhancing residents’ functional performance and improving their well-being. Committed to empowering people of all ages and abilities to feel safe and comfortable in their homes, AIRMADA Drying Solutions has curated an accessibility-focused product portfolio.
The AirJet Shower Drying System is an innovative solution to an everyday problem: slick surfaces. The system brings forced air into the shower space or wet room to quickly dry the floor and walls, reducing the risk of slippery floors, preventing the growth of mold and mildew, and preserving the life of tile and grout.
“It is a lot to clean a big shower, especially if you’re dealing with inflammation in your wrists or hands,” said Certified Aging in Place Specialist Jackie Haddon. “Anything you can do to minimize the amount of time you’re on your hands and knees scrubbing is important.”
By significantly reducing the drying time, the AirJet System promotes a healthier bathroom environment – one that can be enjoyed for years to come.
The AirPocket Door, a slide-in glass shower door, was designed to replace the traditional swinging door which can trail moisture onto the floor and pose a safety hazard. When the shower is in use, the AirPocket Door creates a full seal, locking in heat and steam.
“Steam showers are great for healing from injuries. They’re good for age. They’re good for any kind of disorder or condition where you have inflammation,” Haddon said. “Often with steam showers, it can become very wet. Any time there is moisture, we increase the potential for falling and damage.”
After the AirPocket Door is closed into its stainless steel pocket, AirJet nozzles in the spine pull air in and dry the glass. The door can be accompanied by either a curbless or raised threshold, depending on the mobility needs of the homeowner. It can also be installed alongside the AirJet Shower Drying System to ensure slip-free surfaces.
“Aging in place is deeply personal to us, and it’s a core principle of the AIRMADA brand,” said Rebecca Jones, national sales manager for AIRMADA Drying Solutions. “Our team prioritizes more than just aesthetics or design trends; we focus on the safety and accessibility features that truly make a house feel like home. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their space, and we all have loved ones – parents, children, guests, pets and ourselves – we want to keep safe.”
